Elwood Curtis’ college dreams are shattered on a two-lane Florida highway. After suffering the ultimate brunt of an innocent mistake, he is sentenced to the afterlife of Nickel Academy, a brutal correctional facility steeped in the Jim Crow South. He meets another inmate, the all-seeing Turner. The two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner shares essential survival advice, while Elwood holds onto his optimistic worldview. Against the backdrop of the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement, Elwood and Turner seem worlds apart from the flamboyant oratory of Rev. Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Elwood struggles to maintain his humanity, awakening Turner’s new vision.
