"Scalde" (Mathilde Bundschuh) barely tolerates the fact that her rural community has given birth to a stranger (Susanne Wolf) in this tight-knit, introspective village
Their association works on a barter system – she trades slurry with neighbors and, thanks to the local elder "Pesolt" for friendly but qualified support; (Ulrich Metz) and more serious support from "Gösta" (Karina Neiheuser) they manage. However, all this is challenged when the village dogs start behaving strangely, just as she meets a new girl "Meisis" (Viola Hinca) who has come from the forest and whom they welcome.
This earns her the enmity of the population, who now mostly shun her
The hugely superstitious population decides that she is some kind of harbinger of evil and demands that she be banished, but "Skalde" is determined that she is a normal young girl and refuses to cooperate. Now might be the time for "Skalde" to wonder if this is the best place for her and the young man to live – especially as the mutterings of the former neighbors become a little more menacing?
Sophie Bech performs well, and Bundschuh’s less-is-more style helps create an atmospheric drama that is tense at times, engaging others, and the film never gives them or us the answers we might expect
This film takes place at the same time, which makes the plot even more powerful when it deals with aspects of the local lupine mystique that seem so anachronistic, created by people who regularly use cars and mobile phones!
