The main plot points have changed, but the overall theme remains the same, as overworked restaurant staff go through their daily routine to put food on the table for demanding customers. At the beginning of 'La Cocina' $800 is missing from the cash register, leading to an internal investigation that causes additional stress for employees.
The script’s self-indulgent running time of 140 minutes proves to be the project’s weakest link
Many of the workers are immigrants and the atmosphere is rough, dirty, cruel and combative. Black-and-white cinematography, lavish direction and stunning acting capture these elements in a fantastic stage of filmmaking pyrotechnics that leaves one speechless in awe.
It’s a shame, because there’s so much to admire here
